Welcome to Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC

The Law establishing the Commission provides for the Chairman and Six Electoral Commissioners to be appointed for a five-year tenure. The Chairman is the commission’s Chief Executive Officer and also the chief electoral officer, while the Permanent Secretary is the Accounting Officer.

How it all began

The establishment of State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) is provided for in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in section 197(1) as follows:

“There shall be established for each State of the Federation, the State Independent Electoral Commission whose composition and power are as set out in part 11 of the Third Schedule to this Constitution.”

It is, therefore, in line with this Constitutional Provision that the Lagos State House of Assembly established the Lagos State the Lagos State Independent National Electoral Commission (LASIEC) though Law No. 15 of November 27, 2001. The Commission was consequently inauguration on 22nd January, 2002 by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the then Governor of Lagos State.
The Law has, however, been repealed and replaced by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) Law No. 18, 2008 which has also been further amended by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (Amendment) Law 2016.

The Commission at inception, operated at the Women Development Centre, Agege and Lagos State School of Nursing and Mid-wifery, Ikoyi, before it relocated its present Headquarters at No 1, Lancaster Street, Sabo Yaba on Monday 15th, April, 2002.

Lagos State, being one of Nigeria’s most populous states, has a large voter population. According to the statistic from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Lagos has over 7 million registered voters, making it the highest number of voters in the country.

Core Activities

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) is responsible for conducting local government elections in Lagos State. It organizes elections for councilors and chairpersons in LGAs and LCDAs. LASIEC manages voter education, voter registration, and ensures a transparent election process. It also monitors campaigns, collates results, and declares winners. Additionally, LASIEC resolves electoral disputes in accordance with the law.

Ad-Hoc Employment

Ad-hoc employment by recruiting temporary staff to assist in organizing, managing, and conducting LG elections.

Permanent Employment

Involves in hiring full-time staff responsible for the ongoing administrative and operational functions of the commission..

Political Parties

Oversees the participation of political parties in LG elections by regulating their registration, monitoring their activities

Voting Guideline/Procedure

Outline the steps for eligible voters to participate in local government elections

Election Results

Responsible for the collation and announcement of election results after the completion of local government elections

Nomination Forms

Provides nomination forms for candidates seeking to run in local government elections

Issues an election time-table outlining key dates for the local government election process

Election Observers

Permits election observers to monitor the electoral process, ensuring transparency and credibility in local government elections
