LASIEC TO CONDUCT BY-ELECTIONS IN IBEJU-LEKKI, ODI-OLOWO/OJUWOYE AND SOMOLU ON JUNE 23, 2026

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) in line with Section 13(3) of the LASIEC Law 2008 (as amended) and Section 28(3) of the Electoral Act 2026, will conduct by-elections on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, to fill vacant councillorship seats in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA), and Somolu Local Government Area respectively.

The by-election is inevitable so as‎‎‎ to ensure continued democratic representation and effective grassroots governance in the affected wards following the demise of the occupants of the vacant seats in the respective legislative councils.

The three (3nos.) affected Electoral Wards for the by-election include Ward C (Orimedu I) in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Ward H (Kayode/Fadeyi), Odi Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area and Ward F (Bajulaiye), Somolu Local Government Area.

All registered Political Parties are required to Purchase Nomination Forms on behalf of their Candidates at the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission’s Headquarters, 1 Lancaster Street, Sabo, Yaba and comply with the notice of the by-election as published.

Political Parties are to commence election campaigns for their Candidates on Friday, 12th and to end on Tuesday, 16th June 2026. Collection of nomination forms, submission of nomination forms by political parties and substitution of candidates by political parties shall run simultaneously within the same date of Friday 12th   through Tuesday 16th June 2026.

While the display of register of voters for by elections at ward collation centres shall come up on Saturday 13th June 2026, names of nominated candidates and persons nominating them shall be displayed on Tuesday 16th June 2026. The validation of candidates’ documents shall be held at the Commissions Headquarters as well as the display of list of validated and invalidated Candidates at the shall be on Wednesday, 17th of June, 2026.

The Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), assures residents of the affected areas of the Commission’s commitment to the conduct of free, fair, credible, transparent, and peaceful elections that reflect the will of the people.  The Commission assures of adequate security arrangements for the safety and orderliness of polls across the designated polling units.

Eligible voters in the affected wards are urged to come out peacefully on election day and exercise their civic responsibility by voting for candidates of their choice.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd) also called on political parties and candidates to conduct their campaigns and activities in a peaceful manner and adhere strictly to the electoral guidelines and code of conduct.

**inspects electoral offices in the State

The Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) Hon. Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd) accompanied by members of the Commission embarked on facilities assessment tour of the 20 Local Government and 37 Local Council Development Areas in the State as part of the preparation for the conduct of the next Local Government election in the State.

She said the Commission as a matter of urgency needs to get acquainted with the Geo-Political terrain of all the Local Councils and Council Development Areas and understand the challenges likely to be encountered by Electoral Officials as well as the logistics involved.

“This visit equally allows for firsthand information of the state of the Commission’s Offices vis-à-vis equipment as well as storage facilities available” She retreated.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile assures Lagosians of the readiness of the Commission to provide a level playing ground for all the actors in the political sphere as well as a secure and safe environment for electoral activities.

She therefore solicits the support of the Local Government Chairmen, as Chief security officers in their respective domain in achieving violent free eletions, before, during and after.

She said the Commission shall remain committed to her core value of transparency, impartiality, accountability and excellence in the conduct of Local Government Elections. Institutionalization of sustainable electoral process in Lagos State vide the adoption of international best practices.

She pleaded with all political actors and stakeholders to ensure that the game is played by the rules so that there can be a free, fair and credible election culminating in the people’s Mandate.

The team includes other members of the Commission; Mr. Samson Ajibade, Chief Oluwo Akim Durojaiye, Dr. Metilelu Olumide, Mr, Aileru Abeeb, Hon. Oladele Adekanye as well as the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Mr Abdul-Rafiu Fashola

The first phase of the inspection tour took the Commission members to Eti-Osa, I Mainland, Yaba, Oshodi/Isolo, Amuwo- Odofin, Alimosho, Igando/Ikotun, Egbe/ Idimu and Badagry division.
