LASIEC at a glance:

How it all began

The establishment of State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) is provided for in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in section 197(1) as follows:

“There shall be established for each State of the Federation, the State Independent Electoral Commission whose composition and power are as set out in part 11 of the Third Schedule to this Constitution.”

The Commission was consequently inauguration on 22nd January, 2002 by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the then Governor of Lagos State.
The Law has, however, been repealed and replaced by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) Law No. 18, 2008 which has also been further amended by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (Amendment) Law 2016.

The Commission at inception, operated at the Women Development Centre, Agege and Lagos State School of Nursing and Mid-wifery, Ikoyi, before it relocated its present Headquarters at No 1, Lancaster Street, Sabo Yaba on Monday 15th, April, 2002.
